Shindenkan Denmark anno 2016 – State of the nation, – with general meeting news

By Martin E. Hansen, Member until 2018

The annual local member associations' general meetings were all held as a prelude to the national Shindenkan federations and Shindenkan Honbu (JGS) general meetings, so that the most beautiful and effective functions of democracy could be brought up on a national level.
Season 2015-2016 national general meetings were held as announced on June 19, 2016. As all members know, the Shindenkan organization consists of; Shindenkan forbund (Political Democratic Association) and Shindenkan Honbu-dojo (The 1000-year competence system, which consists of; JGS; Jokokan Greve Strand & SDCC; Shindenkan Development & Competence Centre).

The two legs are coordinated by a cross-organisational democratically elected committee called SOPORG; Shindenkan Organization & Operation. The committee consists of the chairman and deputy chairmen of the Confederation and Honbu, as well as a democratically elected member from either the confederation's board or Honbu's board. Anything else will not be meaningful.

SOPORG also serves as the democratic steering group for all of Shindenkan's major international highly successful projects, such as POMW (2011-2013) and SHIELD KISS, including KataFIT (2014-2019).

Shindenkan Honbu dojo is divided into an operating part and a development & main competence part, which is called SDCC - Shindenkan Development & Competence Center. SDCC has developed everything that is in the operating part since 1988 and is at the absolute international top level. That is why SDCC continuously receives teaching invitations to top performers both in Japan and China, but has also received top Japanese performers in Denmark. SDCC consists of one main resource and person; Yamani-Itotani Sensei.

SOPORG must approve all budgets and expenses in SDCC and projects in writing, so that all statutory audit rules are complied with. The elected auditors have access to all accounts every year, including all expenses, which are always recorded electronically using bank statements. In addition, everyone at the general meeting has access every two to three years to the same as the elected auditors, and to ask all the questions they wish about the expenditure and income items. The reason why it is every 2-3 years is because of the time consumption, as a few non-contributing members are very curious, to the great annoyance of many contributing members. The general meeting therefore adopted the above time interval. And that's how a democratic organization works.

Shindenkan is a 100 % competency-based democratic martial arts organization. In short, the Shindenkan organization would not exist without it. This differs from most popular sports in terms of exercise; Football, handball, badminton, gymnastics, athletics, etc. Of course, this is not the case at elite level.

I was given the task, as outgoing Federation Chairman, to write both the traditional "State of the Nation", but also expanded this with important decisions taken at the general meetings. So of course I do .

Due to an extremely stressful season with the rollout of "Progression after Effort", we had to hold three general meetings on the same day, which were however met with great understanding. Thank you!

First, the Shindenkan Honbu (JGS), including the SDCC annual general meeting, was held. There were few questions, and the atmosphere was incredibly good, even though JGS will have new premises from the summer of 2017, when Tjørnelyskolen, which has housed JGS since 1994, closes. Everyone was very proud of the SHIELD KISS project, but especially of the concrete physical and mental results with KataFIT. The focus for SDCC next season will be on an update of the Curriculum Handbook from 2009, as well as a new modern website together with the association.

Then it was time for the Shindenkan association's general assembly, where the atmosphere was so laughable that the undersigned moderator had to shut up the participants several times. This is despite the fact that it was decided to raise the federation quota for the first time since 2009 to DKK 250/year/member, with the same distribution key as before.

As the icing on the cake, SDKSkyts - Shindenkan Shooting Association's general meeting, which also went according to agenda, where we had had a really good season, and now the summer season which is outdoors is well under way.

After 2 hours and 23 minutes, all three general meetings were held in good order, and all boards agreed to use the same baker next year, as all participants were extremely constructive and had prepared beforehand.

Of decisive general meeting decisions, I would just like to mention the following;

Unanimously chosen at Shindenkan Denmark's GF16;

New chairman of Shindenkan Denmark (2016-2018); Soren Nielsen

Nye Forbund's vice-chairman for Shindenkan Denmark (2016-2018); Jens Iversen

Newly elected member of SOPORG (2016-2020) after election and nomination by Honbus GF16; Martin Hansen.

SOPORG as elected at GF2015 consists of, for a five-year period; Federation chairman and deputy chairman, Honbu chairman and deputy chairman, and a member-elected member from either the federation board or Honbu's board.

Here is my report:

Another year has passed since the last count of member schools and the number of members in the Shindenkan Association, and for Shindenkan Denmark the 2015-2016 season should be a year in which retention and progression were the focus, after a season affected by municipal reforms that led to a season , which was not optimal from the point of view of growth and expansion.

Despite that, the newly opened Jokokan Gentofte managed to establish itself in North Zealand, where the local operation team and board set new standards, and delivered a good performance in the construction, launch and rooting of a new Shindenkan School. But the launch of Jokokan Gentofte was not the only news of the season, when Honbu-dojo was busy with measures to boost Shindenkan's development.

To support the association and the strategic plan, Honbu-dojo launched the concept "Progression by effort" in the middle of the season. A concept that put an end to many years of patchwork on Yakami Shinsei-ryu's comprehensive graduation model, which despite good intentions had become too unmanageable for both children and adults in the first few years. The new model and structure was well received during the dress rehearsal leading up to the Xmas convention 2015, where it was seriously tested by and consolidated for the summer convention 2016, after which only the fine-tuning remains in the summer holidays. It has now become much more manageable to plan your own "6-12 month graduation project" for both children and parents, if you really want to.

As a natural consequence and development of the black belt graduations at the Summer Convention 2015, and the appointment of Elisabet and Karsten as Deputy Chief Instructors in addition to the densho degree SHODEN, the season 2015/2016 became the year when Next Generation is launched – Jokokan Frederiksberg and Jokokan Korsør get new Chief Instructors and management team, saw the new forces for optimal development opportunities in their journey through Yakami Shinsei-ryu. At the summer meeting 2016, Elisabet was appointed as Chief Instructor in JFr and Karsten in JKO. The outgoing Chief Instructor at JFR – Kjeld Nyrup, is pursuing an old dream and part of his development – the establishment of a Jokokan Østerbro. We welcome the addition of another Jokokan School to the fold and wish both it and Kjeld Nyrup all the best in the future. It should be added that to ensure the greatest possible success, Jokokan Østerbro will receive a special 100% tailored plug 'n' play solution in platinum version, where other newly established schools have received a gold version.

The Shield KISS project continues on a large scale worldwide, and research results confirm the announced recommendations and project objectives announced at the beginning of the project in 2013, which the international medical profession and specialist fields are constantly amazed by. KataFit is just a small part of the large Shield Kiss health umbrella and the tip of the iceberg, where the future will bring more holistic KISS solutions in diet, general health, health, exercise and much more - purely plug 'n' play from the "supermarket shelves". The major connections have been identified and the focal point is the immune system, where, among other things, the many bacteria that thrive in and on humans have colossal importance for humans as a whole, the SHIELD KISS project has, after 2½ years of intensive work, succeeded in coming up with a completely unique overview plan in five coherent levels, which can be used as a management tool for a jointly managed overall UMIN project plan for the next 10-20 years of tens of thousands of projects. The difference from before to this completely unique project tool is that before there was no overall management, coherence and common goals, but there is a very large possibility and probability of that now. Which will be a significant accelerator in coherent discoveries, the bigger pieces of the puzzle that will be collected and documented for eventually as the ultimate goal; to understand the full context across all specialisations, but also future specialisations, which have to arise for the full picture.

Member development

In Shindenkan Denmark, we make the member count from week 6 to week 6 the following year, and we have made this count since week 6 in February 2009, when in February 2010 there were 665 registered members in the Shindenkan organization. That is:

  • Calculation for the year 2009, calculated in week 6 2010: 665 members
  • Calculation for the year 2010, calculated in week 6 2011: 719 members
  • Calculation for the year 2011, calculated in week 6 2012: 857 members
  • Calculation for the year 2012, calculated in week 6 2013: 1084 members
  • Calculation for the year 2013, calculated in week 6 2014: 1101 members
  • Calculation for the year 2014, calculated in week 6 2015: 1365 members
  • Calculation for the year 2015, calculated in week 6 2016: 1387 members

The statement for 2016 has shown a membership increase of 2 %, which means that we per week 6 2016, there are 1387 members in Shindenkan Denmark:

The organization's membership is an expression of the number of dues-paying members throughout the season, but unfortunately not how many there are at the time of the calculation - week 6 2016

We are sure that the Honbu dojo's initiatives regarding progression after effort will be an ever-increasing success, which will have a positive knock-on effect on both member retention and progression in the coming season, so that it can be the best season ever, and for many years to come.
The results already for the first half of 2016 show a gigantic progress of next 600 %, for parents of Jokokidz and JokoTeens, and adults who actively take responsibility for their personal graduation project towards the next degree. It has increased from 10 % in the period 2000-2015 to now over 67 % in 2016. And still with room for everyone – the elite such as the exerciser.

Remember! All work in Shindenkan and Shindenkan's member schools is voluntary and unpaid, because we believe that our values make a difference - we believe that Shindenkan is the place for everyone who wants to practice multi-track martial arts, and we want to pass on our knowledge and skills to a new generation in an improved, unreserved and structured way for the benefit of them and us. We say THANK YOU to everyone who contributed and supported us in 2015-2016 in Denmark, Europe and internationally.

With these words, as outgoing chairman of the federation for the last 2 years, I will pass the torch on to the new chairman of the federation, who can hopefully create even better results for Shindenkan Denmark in the next period towards 2020, when the Shindenkan organization's overall strategic plan 2020 must be renewed during the General Meetings 2020.

Kindest Shindenkan greetings

Martin Hansen, outgoing Federation Chairman, Shindenkan Denmark
