When I first heard about POMW and was told that we had to learn to shoot with a pistol, I thought about what I could use it for. It is not martial arts such as jujutsu or kenjutsu that we train, as we are a multi-track martial arts system.
The first course was approx. 3 hours of theory where Kimu Sensei told everything about POMW, weapons and history so we got a better insight into why we had to learn to shoot and why it had to be a gun.
After the theory, we shot for approx. 2 hours with air guns, which shoot with co2 bullets and it is very similar to a real gun, just without recoil.
When the course was over, I was a bit annoyed because I couldn't hit a sk.. at 5 meters even though I tried to do the things he had told me.
But we then had to practice our hand position for 21 days for 30 minutes every day because it was the most important thing if you wanted to learn to hit and that's what Kimu Sensei had done as well.
I was a bit skeptical about it because I couldn't really see how it would make one good at shooting and how one could become better at hitting.
I thought that the only way to become good at shooting would be to shoot with bullets, then you would get better every time, and not by only having to practice hand position, which is also a bit more boring.
I was so completely surprised that when we had to shoot in POMW I TSM B I could hit and it was almost 100 % in black at 5m. Just 2 weeks ago I couldn't hit at all and I had only practiced the handstand for 30 min. every day for 21 days so I could see that it had helped an insane amount.
Was fully up and running because it was far above my expectations had maybe expected to hit the target at 5 meters a few times if I was lucky, but not 100 % black or hit for 8.5m or 12 m.
The next day early in the morning we had to shoot again so it was almost like a shooting marathon that weekend and it went even better in the morning when we had been shooting for approx. 6 hours the day before and had learned a lot.
We then had to learn to shoot targets while walking and in motion, and it was actually not that difficult when you had practiced the hand position and base so much.
After the shooting marathon weekend, where we had 2 courses in a row, I was quite tired, but also very happy with what I had achieved and how good I had become in a short time.
10 good tips.
1. Practice the hand position.
2. Only use the tip or thumb of your pointer when pulling the trigger.
3. Practice the hand position a little more.
4. Focus only on the sight and not the target.
5. Practice the hand position a little more.
6. Stand in a straight leg position with your back slightly bent forward and your weight on the balls of your feet.
7. Practice hand position a little more.
8. Shoot only when you have exhaled and breathed quietly and calmly.
9. Practice hand position a little more.
10. Always shoot without expectation where you first press soft and fast and afterwards press slow and hard until at some point it says bang without you knowing it because then you hit better.
